The causes of the war were Russia expansion in the Balkans and the dispute over the guardianship of the Holy Places in Palestine. Battles included Balaclava (the Charge of the Light Brigade) and Inkerman (1854). Sevastopol was taken by the Allies (1855) and the war was ended by the Treaty of Paris (1856).
