Food and Drugs Interactions

Some drugs are highly affected by food we eat ; for example,
  • Green leafy vegetables contain Vitamin K , so they affect the therapeutic effect of blood thinners.
  • Aged cheese such as parmesan and blue cheese, soya and wine contain tyramine which interacts with MAO inhibitors such as Nardil and may lead to increase blood pressure.
  • Alcohol interacts with many medications such as antidepressants, anti-anxiety, diabetes drugs, cold and flu, beta-blockers, or sleeping pills causing side effects to worsen like drowsiness, upset stomach, or hypoglycemia.
  • Coffee or caffeinated beverages may cause jitters or rapid heartbeat when taking with asthma, anti-anxiety medications or decongestants.
  • Dairy products may affect the absorption thus effectiveness of some antibiotics or calcium.
  • Grapefruit juice stops enzymes in the stomach from breaking down some drugs  such as cholesterol-lowering agents, blood thinners, blood pressure drugs, tranquilizers, or antidepressants leading to increasing levels of these medications so more side effects such as muscle-ache, stomachache, diarrhea, or drowsiness.
